Alpha Chapter In November 1999, an informational was held to open this organization to women who wanted to help broaden the vision and create a stronger force to help create a sorority. Seven ladies accepted this invitation. Over the next month, these women would work tirelessly to research other sororities and see if the concept of chartering off would be beneficial to them. As time passed, they came to the decision to create their own sorority, one that had service as the basis of what it would become. Over the next six months, these fourteen ladies devoted themselves to serve the Bryan/College Station community. In that spring semester alone, these ladies would complete over 300 hours of service. Through this service, they would create a bond of sisterhood that no other class could compare to or understand. These ladies of diverse backgrounds had the purest of roots for their sisterhood – service. During these months, these ladies continued to meet to create the name, values, concepts, and meanings that would one day become a sorority, but most importantly lay the groundwork of service in the Bryan/College Station area. In May 2000, Texas A&M University recognized Delta Kappa Delta as an Indian Service Sorority with thirteen ladies to be named as the Founding Mothers. The Fall of 2000 was a semester of growth and change. The Founding Mothers found an opportunity to promote their ideals throughout the Texas A&M Greek community by joining the Multicultural Greek Council, which unites various fraternities and sororities for one goal. Also, the Founding Mothers looked to expand their Sisterhood to women who were interested in serving their community and fulfilling the values set and exemplified by the Mothers. On January 27, 2001 the Alpha Class, consisting of thirteen ladies, was inducted into Delta Kappa Delta. These ladies helped set the precedence of what excellence in academics, service, and leadership would become expected in a Sister of Delta Kappa Delta. Over the course of the next year the Sisters of Delta Kappa Delta decided to change their scope from Indian to Indian Subcontinental to embrace all the cultures and variations admired in South Asia. The Sisterhood was also expanded to seven ladies who created the Beta Class of Delta Kappa Delta at Alpha Chapter as well as the creation of the Beta Chapter at Texas Tech University. Service was and always will be the paramount of each succeeding class. In December of 2001 Delta Kappa Delta changed its name to Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, Inc. Delta Kappa Delta is the first Indian Subcontinental Service Sorority of its kind, with thirteen inspirational Founding Mothers to guide this organization into what it has become today. October 1, 1999, is still considered the founding date of Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, Inc. because the purpose and basis of B.E.T.I.S. became the purpose and basis of Delta Kappa Delta. Even from the beginning, these ladies knew that only the purest of intents could create a bond as strong as each person who sees us will ever see- Service had truly set us free. |
